What a sunset cruise is like
Boats slip out of the bayside marinas about an hour and a half before sundown, idle through the mangrove channel, and open up onto Florida Bay — flat, shallow, glassy on a good evening. The ride out is its own show: wading birds heading to roost, the occasional dolphin pod working the channel edges, and Blackwater Sound turning to hammered gold as the light drops.
Then the main event. With no land west of you, the sun goes all the way into the water, and the sky keeps performing for twenty minutes after it's gone — the afterglow is routinely better than the sunset itself. Boats time the return so you ride the color home.
Making it the perfect last act
The sunset cruise is the natural end of a full island day, and it stacks beautifully with everything else: snorkel the reef in the morning when visibility peaks, sandbar or mangrove kayak in the afternoon, fish-house dinner, then the 6 PM boat.
