Single or double?

Singles are lighter, more nimble in the narrow mangrove tunnels, and give you total control of your own pace — the pick for confident paddlers and anyone who treats the hour as quiet time. Doubles are the social option: more stable, easier for beginners to keep moving in a straight line (two engines, as it were), and the only way to bring a younger kid along — parent steers from the back, kid 'helps' up front. Price-wise a double splits cheaper per person than two singles.

One honest warning about tandems: they're nicknamed 'divorce boats' for a reason. Agree on who steers before you launch and you'll be fine.

Where you'll paddle

The self-guided trails wind through the mangrove creeks and lagoons around John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park — flat, wind-sheltered water that stays calm even when the ocean side is choppy. Marked routes mean you can't meaningfully get lost, and the full loop fits comfortably in a one-hour rental. Every rental includes a paddle, a vest, a trail orientation and a safety briefing — after that, the hour is yours. Go slow. The biggest rookie mistake is paddling the loop like it's a race; the magic of the mangroves happens at drift speed, when the water goes quiet and the wildlife forgets you're there.

Booking smart

Rentals run hourly through the day, and on busy weekends the fleet does run out — pre-booking guarantees your boat and your hour. What to wear and bring

Clothes that can get wet, water shoes or sandals with a heel strap, reef-safe sunscreen, and a hat. Phones go in a dry bag (rentable at the marina) or stay ashore. Water bottle: yes, always — the mangroves are shaded but Florida is Florida. Bug spray earns its keep on still summer evenings.
