Why Key Largo

undersea park.
In 1963 they lowered an 8.5-foot bronze Christ into the water off Key Largo, and the reef has been the island’s main street ever since. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park protects roughly 70 nautical square miles of the only living coral reef in the continental United States — shallow enough to snorkel, clear enough to see from a glass-bottom boat.
Off the water, Key Largo runs on island time: tiki docks, key lime everything, the original African Queen from the Bogart film, and sunsets over Blackwater Sound.

How far is Key Largo from Miami?
About 60 miles — a 90-minute ride from Downtown Miami. Key Largo is the first and northernmost of the Florida Keys, which makes it the easiest Key to do as a day trip: you spend your day on the island, not on the road.
What is there to do in Key Largo?
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is the headliner — America's first undersea park, with snorkeling and glass-bottom boat tours over the only living coral reef in North America, plus beaches, kayak and paddleboard rentals, and hiking trails. Off the water there are tiki bars right on the ocean, waterfront seafood institutions like The Fish House, and the African Queen — the original boat from the Bogart film.
Do I need to book water activities in advance?
We strongly recommend prebooking the snorkel tour and glass-bottom boat — both sell out in high season. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are usually fine to arrange on the island. You can add any of them when you book your day trip.
Is snorkeling in Key Largo good for beginners?
Yes — the reefs inside John Pennekamp park are shallow, calm, and protected, and every trip includes professional instruction and flotation gear. If you'd rather stay dry, the glass-bottom boat shows you the same reef from above.
Where does the day trip depart from?
Our classic day trip departs from Bayside Marketplace in Downtown Miami; we also run a departure with pickup in Sunny Isles Beach. Both include air-conditioned transportation and a full day of free time on the island, with the return bus in the evening.
