8:00 AM — Get there early
From Miami it's 90 minutes down the Overseas Highway. Driving, aim to cross the Jewfish Creek bridge by 9:30. Car-free, the day trip from Bayside Marketplace leaves Downtown Miami in the morning and hands you roughly 11 hours on the island — the logistics are covered in our no-car guide.
10:00 AM — Morning on the reef
Do the water first, while the wind is down and visibility is at its best. Pick your lane: the 2-hour snorkel adventure over the living reef — shallow, calm, beginner-friendly, detailed in our snorkeling guide — or the glass-bottom boat if your group prefers to stay dry (how those trips work). Either way you're back at the dock by early afternoon, salty and hungry.
1:30 PM — Waterfront lunch

3:00 PM — Slow hour, your style
Three good options. One: kayak or paddleboard the mangrove trails inside Pennekamp park — flat, shaded, full of wildlife (kayaking guide). Two: see the African Queen — the actual 1951 movie boat — at the Mile Marker 100 marina. Three: do absolutely nothing on Cannon Beach with an ice cream from the park concession.
5:30 PM — Tiki dock, golden hour
Key Largo faces Florida Bay, which means it gets the sunset — a rarity on the Atlantic side of Florida. Claim a stool at a waterfront tiki bar on the bay side, order something frozen, and watch the sky go mango over the water. This is the hour that converts day-trippers into people planning their next trip down.
7:30 PM — Roll home
The tour bus departs Key Largo at 7:30 PM and has you back in Downtown Miami around 9. Drivers: northbound US-1 is easy after dark — one road, no decisions.

Get on the water. The reef is why this island exists on itineraries at all, and it's the thing you can't do from a car window. Book the morning boat first and build the rest of the day around it — in high season, book it before you leave home.
