Key Largo vs Key West: Which Florida Keys Day Trip Should You Take?

Every Miami visitor with a free day asks the same question: Key West or somewhere closer? Both are the Florida Keys, both are turquoise water and tiki bars — but they are very different days, and the right answer depends on what you actually want from the trip.

The time math

Key West sits about 165 miles from Miami — roughly 3.5 to 4 hours each way. On a day trip, that's seven to eight hours on a bus for around four hours in town. Key Largo is 60 miles away — 90 minutes each way — and a day trip there gives you around 11 hours on the island. If your priority is time in the water rather than time in transit, Key Largo wins on arithmetic alone.

What each island does best

Key West is a town: Duval Street, Mallory Square at sunset, the Hemingway House, the Southernmost Point buoy. It's history, bars and people-watching, with the water as a backdrop. If you want to say you stood 90 miles from Cuba, only Key West does that.

Key Largo is the water. It calls itself the Dive Capital of the World for a reason — John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park protects the only living coral reef in the continental United States, and it starts just offshore. The snorkeling is the best in the Keys, the glass-bottom boats show the reef to everyone else, and the vibe is tiki docks and fish houses rather than a party strip.

The honest comparison

Choose Key West if it's your first time in the Keys and the name matters to you, if you want nightlife and history, or if you're happy trading bus hours for bragging rights. The drive down the Overseas Highway across the Seven Mile Bridge is genuinely scenic — the ride is part of the show.

Choose Key Largo if you want to snorkel or dive, if you're traveling with kids who won't survive eight bus hours, if you'd rather have a full unhurried day than a rushed afternoon, or if you've already done Key West. It's also cheaper: the Bayside departure starts at a fraction of a Key West tour price.

Can you do both?

On separate days, absolutely — they complement each other well. In one day, no. The islands are two hours apart, and combining them means seeing neither properly.

The bottom line

Key West is a destination you visit; Key Largo is water you get into. If your perfect Keys photo is a snorkel mask and a sea turtle, book Key Largo. If it's a sunset cocktail on Duval Street, make the longer haul south. Either way, book water activities ahead in high season — the good boats fill up first.
